Lal Masjid operation: SC moved for registration of FIR

ISLAMABAD: A petition seeking registration of cases against those responsible for the killing of hundreds of students, including children, during the Lal Masjid operation was filed with the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

Interior Ministry, additional sessions judge, SSP and SHO Aabpara Police Station have been made respondents in the petition filed by Defence of Human Rights’ Co-ordinator Khalid Khawaja through Khawaja Azhar Rasheed advocate under Article 185 (3) of the Constitution for leave to appeal against an Islamabad High Court verdict.

The IHC had dismissed the same petition on August 22 pointing out that almost all the issues raised in the petition had already been decided by the Supreme Court through a suo motu notice, thus no further relief could be granted at this stage.

The court, however, held that the petitioner could move the IHC after issuance of a detailed judgment of the Supreme Court in Lal Masjid case.

The petitioner contended that the petition had different pleas, which were not discussed or decided by the Supreme Court. He further contended that the respondents were involved in the killing of Lal Masjid’s former naib khateeb Abdur Rasheed Ghazi, his mother and hundreds of students of Jamia Hafsa. The petitioner submitted that the IHC had unnecessarily laid emphasis on the SC judgment passed on October 2, 2007 and had wrongly assumed that the said judgment had dealt with all aspects of the incident and nothing remained outside its purview.
