PESHAWAR: A famous Pashto singer escaped a gun attack in the Michni Gate police precincts on Thursday.

The singer, Gulzar Alam, reported to the police that two unidentified people opened fire at him when he was on his way home near the Baacha Khan Markaz.

A police official said that a case had been registered against unidentified attackers.

Gulzar told Daily Times that two armed men opened fire at a taxicab he was travelling in but he escaped unhurt by jumping out of the taxi. “Later, a motorist gave me a lift to the Markaz”, he said.

He said he had been receiving threats over telephone asking him to stop singing. “I cannot say anything about the attackers and it is the government’s responsibility to trace them,” he said.

Gulzar moved to Quetta during the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal rule in the NWFP but returned to Peshawar on the invitation of the Awami National Party, which gave him a job at the Markaz.
